Jammu and Kashmir Assembly Speaker Rejects BJP’s Resignation Demand, Challenges Party to Bring No-Confidence Motion
Assembly Speaker
Jammu and Kashmir Assembly Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather on Thursday firmly rejected the BJP’s call for his resignation, following a ruckus in the Assembly over a resolution seeking the restoration of Article 370. The resolution, which was passed the previous day, sparked heated debates in the House.
Rather, addressing the BJP’s demand, stated that if the opposition party had no confidence in him, they were welcome to move a no-confidence motion. His remarks came as tensions escalated following the passage of the controversial resolution, with the BJP accusing the Speaker of bias in the proceedings.

Jammu and Kashmir Assembly Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather responded to BJP’s demand for his resignation, emphasizing that the Speaker does not have the authority to reverse resolutions passed by the House. Speaking to PTI, Rather clarified, “They are asking the Speaker to take back the resolution. The Speaker does not have the powers. Anything passed by the House can only be undone by the House itself. The Speaker has limited power in these issues as he has to preside, count, and give decisions based on the facts in front of him.”
On the BJP’s calls for his resignation, Rather pointed out that they should follow the proper procedure for his removal. “If they do not have faith in the Chair, shouting slogans is not the way. There is a procedure for a no-confidence motion. They should bring it. If the House passes it, I will go on my own, whether any member tells me or not. However, they will not do it but keep raising slogans,” he added.
