India Suffers First Home Test Series Loss in 12 Years as New Zealand Clinches Victory by 113 Runs

  • India experienced a significant setback on Saturday at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune, losing the second Test to New Zealand by 113 runs and surrendering the series with an unassailable 2-0 lead. This marks India’s first home Test series defeat in 12 years, with their last loss occurring in 2012 when Alastair Cook’s England team triumphed 2-1. In that series, India initially took the lead after the first Test, but England bounced back to win the next two matches, while the fourth match ended in a draw.
  • In the current series, India faced an uphill battle after losing the first Test in Bengaluru by eight wickets. Their struggles began with a dismal first innings total of just 46 runs under overcast conditions, putting them under immediate pressure. New Zealand seized the opportunity, with Rachin Ravindra scoring a century and Tim Southee contributing a late innings cameo, giving the visitors a solid advantage. Although Sarfaraz Khan’s maiden century and Rishabh Pant’s aggressive 99 provided some resistance, India could only set a modest target of 107 runs, which New Zealand chased down comfortably.

A similar story played out in Pune, where India was bowled out for 156 in their first innings, handing New Zealand a commanding lead of 103 runs. New Zealand’s captain, Tom Latham, anchored their second innings with a steady 86, enabling the team to post a total of 255 and setting India a daunting target of 359 runs. While Yashasvi Jaiswal provided a quick start and the middle order made notable contributions, India ultimately fell short, resulting in their series defeat.

Prior to this loss, India had enjoyed an impressive streak of 18 consecutive Test series victories at home, a run that began with a clean sweep of Australia in 2013.
