Cyclone Dana Set to Hit Odisha, Bengal Tomorrow; Urgent Evacuations as Storm Poses Severe Threat

Cyclone Dana is rapidly approaching the coast of Odisha, expected to make landfall early Friday morning, bringing with it heavy rains and thunderstorms. The cyclone will impact southern West Bengal and coastal Odisha, potentially affecting nearly half of Odisha’s population after landfall.

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, after reviewing the state’s preparedness, revealed that only about 30 percent of the population in identified ‘danger zones’—around 3-4 lakh people—had been evacuated by Wednesday evening. The evacuation process will continue on Thursday morning.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Cyclone Dana is likely to make landfall between Bhitarkanika National Park and Dhamra port, starting from the night of October 24. IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said wind speeds could reach up to 120 kmph during landfall, with the heaviest rain, wind, and storm surges expected between the night of October 24 and the morning of October 25.
